Grand Funk Railroad - Closer To Home - Shea Stadium 1971
BackThis is a clip from the legendary Shea Stadium Concert that broke The Beatles ticket sales record. A record that still stands today (37 years later). I'm proud to say this video is in the permanent archives of Shea Stadium & The N.Y. Mets. Yes, this is the real deal, the Grand Funk Railroad we all love at the peak of their great career. Grand Funk Railroad is America's Band. This is a historic concert that folks still rave about. If you were there, feel lucky, because you were a part of history. This is considered by many to be one of the greatest concerts in the short history of "Hard Rock/Metal". Grand Funk Railroad was truly a "Performance Vehicle". It is amazing that this record has stood this long, a testament to how great & influincial this band was in the early 1970's. Check out the link below to see what Mark Farner has to say today about this historic performance. Grand Funk Railroad ruled the world from '69-'76 becoming the first band to earn 10 consecutive platinum albums! Some call it "Industrial Rock". You'll see no lazers or pyro here, just some of the greatest music ever performed live. Shea Stadium suffered structural damage after this show. In fact, the concert was almost stopped because Shea Stadium was oscillating from the excited crowd. Click on the link below & sign the online petition to induct Mark Farner & GFRxR into The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame now!
Everyone go here for Mark Farner's interview about this show:
Everybody, listen to me,
And return me, my ship.
Im your captain, Im your captain,
Although Im feeling mighty sick.
Ive been lost now, days uncounted,
And its months since Ive seen home.
Can you hear me, can you hear me,
Or am I all alone.
If you return me, to my home port,
I will kiss you mother earth.
Take me back now, take me back now,
To the port of my birth.
Am I in my cabin dreaming, or are you really scheming,
To take my ship away from me?
Youd better think about it, I just cant live without it.
So, please dont take my ship from me.
Yeah, yeah, yeah ...
I can feel the hand, of a stranger,
And its tightening, around my throat.
Heaven help me, heaven help me,
Take this stranger from my boat.
Im your captain, Im your captain,
Although Im feeling mighty sick.
Everybody, listen to me,
And return me, my ship.
Im your captain, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Im your captain, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Im your captain, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Im your captain, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Im getting closer to my home ...
Im getting closer to my home ...
Im getting closer to my home ...
Im getting closer to my home ...
Ohhhh ...
Im getting closer to my home ...
Im getting closer to my home ...
Im getting closer to my home ...
Im getting closer to my home ...
Repeated to fade

They came to my local fair this year (minus Farner or course) and Brewer & Schacher still rock the fucking house 37 years later.

How you doing, Packed Funk? Alright, I hope. Ha, sittin' here listening to Closer to home, watching the girls fighting it out and cooking in the kitchen! I'd go in there to help, but they won't let me. My home. Love them. Anyway, keep up the good fight, my friend.

Grand Funk is to the rock n' roll HOF like Gil Hodges is to the Baseball HOF; both have plenty of fans and admirers and there talents and accomplishments speak for themselves, it's just that enough time has gone by since induction eligibility that they'll never get in now. Sad.

One of the greatest bands of all time. The critics hated them and that is why they are not inducted...Are you telling me they put rap in the rock n roll in the hall of fame? They should burn it down and start over..

Packedfunk=You are correct Grand Funk Railroad haslong deserved Rock n Roll hall recognition. Its likeleaving George Brett or Cal ripken outof thebaseball hall of fame or leaving O.j.Simpson out of Prison not having them inducted! And while their at it how about Chicago,The Dog Night,The Grass Roots,Doobles,Deep Purple,Kiss,Alice Cooper,Moody blues,Genesis,Robert Palmer,Rush,America,Linda Ronstadt,StevieNicks,BTo,The Guess Who,and the most ridiculas omission of them all Neal Diamond?
