The writing 'shines' when you hear him read it - the essay's stand as great items but the readings elevate the work to genius!

Okay, fine, maybe his writing is not particularly hilarious for a minority, ie: me. But "I have to disagree" with your assertation that his humour is intellectual, and you have to "think about it". His humour requires you to have a brain yes. It requires you to know certain things yes. But it is not particularly "intellectual", whatever that means.
Maybe its just an American thing.
BTW, I still really enjoy reading his books, I just don't see whats SO funny about them.

I have to disagree. His humor is intellectual, and as such is not laugh worthy to many. However, to those who don't mind thinking about their humor, the man is a comedic genius.

He's a nice guy, the stories are mildly, wryly funny, but not laugh worthy.
Sometimes I wonder why he's so lauded by the critics and adored by the public.
Still, that little paper shuffle and the nervous, trying not to look too pleased smile of his is really endearing.

Interesting how those who don't like him apparently like to watch his videos. I've read all of his books and "awesome" doesn't begin to explain his talent. If you don't like it, don't watch it. I don't come to your house and slap the dick out of your mouth! He's a brilliant writer - no one does satire like him. Sad too how many people feel the need to belittle those who like sedaris? We all like what we like, que sera.
