She blows my mind how attached and involved you get with her character in just the these short segments. Joss is brilliant! Firefly should still be on. SCREW FOX!!

holy crap, summer glau is a genius and joss whedon is just as great.

as for the what they did to her, it turns out that they cut into her brain, stripping some part of it so she experiences all of her emotions at once, and she can't block them out. and camurgladius is right, but i'm pretty much positive she's talking about another "reader" that they experimented on before her, but they cut too deep into his brain, killing him.

*Some spoilers* A whole lot of extremely unethical medical procedures, basically (for example, they removed the part of her brain thought to hold the mechanism for "putting aside" emotion, hence the "You cut it out!" screams). The episode "Ariel" from the TV show, and the movie Serenity, have most of the details.

As for the ~3:50-4:10 bit, River's empathic to the point of telepathy; she's 'reading' an event from the interviewer's past (apparently the traumatic death of one of his patients).

...Unless you're referring to the "It's the Pax" bit right before it, in which case: it's referring to a rather nasty incident in the Firefly 'verse's backstory, which again is detailed in the movie Serenity.
