I don't think that's the case... I always hear the song as a story: The singer is in love with a girl, but she's already with somebody else- the singer's best friend. So he watches them together, seeing them getting closer, being so intimate in front of him because he's a friend, part of the crowd, and all the while it's tearing him apart... but he put's on his face. He's 'Mr Brightside', and he can't show how it hurts, because that's not what's expected of him....
Just my view though!

how can so many people be so stupid,the main point of the song is looking on the brightside of things,listen to the lyrics, now there going2bed,my stomach gets sick, but its all in my head...hes paranoid about his girl cheating on him and then where he says,open up my eager eyes cos im mr brightside,he knows its in his head and isnt goin2let wots popping in2 his head change things,he feels how he does about her and thoughts wont change that,so hes looking on the brighterside of the relationship

it was written by the drummer for the lead vocalist(sometihng flowers) and about how flowers's old girlfriend cheated on him
