Kudo and MMA is totally different sport. As a Kudo practitioner I would tell that Kudo is more verse in their strikes compared to almost all MMA fighters.

Kudo utilizes judo throws, grappling and Karate. The karate originated from Kyokushin. Sensei Azuma took fifth place in the First World Open Kyokushin Championships.

And, Kyokushin is Karate. It did not originate from karate.

I'm not sure what you mean by poor mans MMA.
The helmet is used for protection so that people don't get the brain injury that one gets when you get hit by gloves. I'm not talking about cuts and bruises. I'm speaking of real brain damage.
