In an interview on of the murderers said she was told what to do by the guy with the pickup truck, not by Manson himself. So if she runs up to a tied up woman and stabs her a million times that can't be his fault. Shit how many people would be murdered if everyone would always kill just because someone suggests it? They were educated and he was a bum, that's the worst person to blame a murder on.

They blame Manson because the people who actually did the killing were the product of not only their society but young, white, middle class kids, one of their own and they simply couldn't have that.Manson was on the fringes of their society, in their view a bum. The perfect scapegoat.
