Almost all people can remember where & what they were doing when important events in history have happened. I can remember vividly the evening that the Fitz went down like it just happened yesterday. I was working as a food service manager for a company called Johnston Outboard Marine Corp. in Waukegan, Il. I got out of work around seven that evening & when I went to the parking lot to make my drive home the weather was really bad. The wind was blowing around 40 mph & it was snowing.

The lot was about a quarter of a mile from Lake Michigan but you could hear the waves crashing on the shore. I turned on the radio & that's when I heard the report of a ship missing on Lake Superior & I mused to myself, "God help those poor sailors that are out there in this weather. If it's this bad here I can't even imagine what it is like approximately 300 mile north of here. The next morning our fears were confirmed as the news said that the Fitz had vanished & there were no survivors.
