Oh yes, there is. He is named as the author in the first folio. That Ben Jonson contributed a poem dedicated to him in this folio is evidence of the authenticity of his authorship. We know he was an actor among the Lord Chamberlain's Men, later the King's Men. He was a co-owner of the Globe Theatre. He was a businessman, but he was also active as a playwright and actor in the Elizabethan and Jacobean theatre scene. There is evidence to support this, but no evidence to the contrary.

rigstula, there is no evidence for the Stratford-born man (who we think of as Shakespeare the playwrite) having ever written the plays. There is, however, evidence of a Stratford-born Shakespeare conducting business in London. The Shakespeare that can be proven to exist was definitely a businessman, but not definitely a playwrite.

is there any evidence whatsoever that shakespeare actually wrote the plays? just wondering.....

Yes. Playwright Robert Greene wrote about him in 1592, calling him 'an upstart Crow'. Ben Jonson, another playwright, was his friend and rival, and published a poem in memory of Shakespeare after his death. There is also plenty of evidence tying Shakespeare to the London theatre scene as a playwright, actor and leader of a company whose plays were very popular at the courts of both Elizabeth I and James I. The 'evidence' that Shakespeare did not write his plays are just conspiracy theories.

It's quite simple: Shakespeare wrote Shakespeare's plays.

To doubt that is mere waste of time.

Period.

I agree with you one hundred percent. It has also been proven that Michelangelo didn't paint the Sistene Chapel. It was the pope! And Tolstoy never wrote War and Peace. It was the Czar!! Einstein never came up with the theory of relativiy. He was no aristocrat! Plus he was Jewish! What's this conspiracy to say these people ever had the nerve to accomplish anything when real pride comes with social standing!

None of the evidence regarding the theory that Shakespeare wasn't the author of 38 plays (co-writer of some of these) is convincing. The reason is that the evidence available that Shakespeare was the author far outweighs the evidence any of these theories have presented.

But here's for IDENTITY: Look at the CHANDOS PORTRAIT and the FIRST PROOF of the DROESHOUT print, and tell me that man is not JEWISH! Does he look anything Anglo-Saxon? Amazingly NOT!! Too bad the British would have lynched him or burned him if they ever found that out
