I agree with your underlying feelings pertaining our current state, but I disagree with your view toward the "hopless lyrics" and lack of "soul".
The song Crazy is about how Cee-Lo realized that it was God, not him, that was in ultimated control of his life. He was "crazy" when he thought that Cee-Lo was in charge, and the effects of him trying to solve his own problems was making him go crazy.

I heard it on Power 92.1 FM back in the mid 1990s in the wee hours of the morning while doing security at Beaumont Correctional Center.

Sounds cool. It's nice when you can reference a song and its inherent mood with a distinctive moment in time. Especially in the 90's when so much was coming at us every year.
For me, I was 14 on an Air Force base in Germany. This was one of the first cd's (after the Street Fighter Soundtrack, Ready to Die, and Funkdafied) that I saved up to buy. Man I felt grrrown.
